TLC was conceived and developed as a response to direct personal experience of dealing with aging senior relatives from a distance. I live in the US and have an aging mother living alone in Great Britain, some 7,000 miles away. She is fiercely independent and has denied all attempts to provide help for her everyday living requirements. For some time I had thought her reluctance to accept the fact that she needed help was just stubbornness. It was not until she had a major fall in her apartment that we all become aware that she was suffering from symptoms of macular degeneration and age related dementia.
On discussing this with my friends and peers I became acutely aware of the difficulties we were all facing when trying to balance family and career demands with the growing need to provide more care and attention for our aging loved ones who want to stay living in their own homes, often thousands of miles away!
